Lexington- Missouri's most haunted city
Ghosts are just a part of life for Lexington business owner Shelli Jernigan.
"Our shop is downstairs and we recently moved upstairs as our living quarters; that is when we realized
that things were not quite right," explains Shelli, "Lights going on and off, noises and an uncomfortable
feeling in the corner bedroom indicated a ghost!"
Shelli's business, Alexander Mitchell Mercantile, is an eclectic shop named after the bank robbed
October 30, 1866 by Jesse James.
"I think that it would be really cool if Jesse's ghost was here in the building," exclaims Sherry, "even if he
is not here we are not afraid of the any ghosts in the building."
Alexander Mitchell Mercantile is one of the many locations featured on the Lexington Ghost Tour.
Considered to be the most haunted city in Missouri by Ghost Tours of Missouri and several paranormal
investigation teams, the city has a historic and haunted past.
"There has been a lot of human tragedy in this area. The steamboat Saluda, the battle of Lexington and
all the guerilla activity" explains resident and Civil War re-enactor Greg Hildreth, "Those events and the
death and suffering that the mines brought to town; I can see why people believe the place is haunted."
Another reason it might be so active is because of the land itself.
"Cities near rivers and areas with certain types of geology seem to have a lot of paranormal activity,"
explains Paranormal Research Investigators (PRI) founder Nick Spantgos, "Given the fact that haunts are
often place-related, geology is one of many factors to consider when researching potential haunts."
Ghost tours scheduled in Lexington feature stories from the Wentworth Military Academy, Battle of
Lexington and the Anderson House, Saluda Steamboat Explosion and Block 42, the notorious gambling
and brothel area.
Sponsored by Ghost Tours of Missouri, the tours include only public buildings with authentic paranormal
activity. Tours are $19.50 per person; the trolley departs from Riley's Pub at 8 p.m. Due to the sensitive
nature of the tours, age is limited to 12 and over. Reservations are required; order tickets online at
www.ghosttourmissouri.com or phone 785-383-2925 for information.
